Sully, small in population, offers many activities for the whole family throughout the year

The 4th of July celebration draws some of the biggest crowds to Sully. The day starts with a 5K fun run/walk and a freewill breakfast. The parade involves the whole community, including floats, school band, and community members showing off their polished tractors, groomed horses, or decorated bikes. Stay the day in Sully and enjoy lunch on the square hosted by the Sully Lions Club and let the kids play in the carnival. The afternoon is filled with water fights and ball games, and the celebration concludes with fireworks.

Freedom rock viewsThe Jasper County Freedom Rock is located in the southeast corner of the Sully Jasper County freedom rockCentral Park. It was moved to town in December 2013, donated from the pasture of Glenn and Thelma Vanderpol south of Sully. The 7’x9’x10′ rock weighs 18.17 tons. Ray “Bubba” Sorensen II, at age 34, of Greenfield painted it beginning at 6 a.m. on June 20, 2014. After working in all kinds of weather, Sorensen applied the last paint stroke to the rock at 7:30 p.m. on June 26, 2014. The rock was dedicated as a memorial honoring U.S. veterans everywhere during the July 4, 2014 celebration. Featured on the east side of the rock is Revolutionary War hero Sgt. William A Japser, whom Jasper County was named after. The west side of the rock is Sorensen’s illustration of a quote by George Washington, “When we assumed the soldier, we did not lay aside the citizen.” He painted a soldier kneeling in a defensive position and then him also kneeling as a farmer checking his corn back home. A complete story of the painting is located on a permanent story board at the rock memorial. Engraved pavers recognize U.S. veterans with connections to the area.

As part of a large farming community, tractors are a huge hit in Sully, making it a popular stop on various tractor rides. Visit Sully during one of the tractor rides to see many tractors, both old and new, and their owners.

The summer is filled with activities for both kids and their parents. The Sully Library offers a Summer Reading Program as well as Story Hour with stories, games, crafts, and snacks. The library also offers summer reading programs for kids that can read as well as those who are read to.

Summer also brings Kids Express. For one week in the summer, the YMCA of Newton visits the Sully square and brings its Kids Express Program, which delivers hours of games and crafts for school-age kids.

Sully also offers activities in the winter. The town square is decorated for the season, and the town also boasts business Christmas open houses the second Saturday in December in conjunction with the annual Faithwalkers youth group soup dinner.
